Court Filming Notice
1. Who is responsible
BluePadel (Pty) Ltd is the Responsible Party under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA) for footage recorded on BluePadel courts. The club hosting the court displays this notice and informs its members. You can reach us, and our Information Officer, at hello@bluepadel.co.za.
2. What is recorded
Video of play on the fitted court. Everyone on court is in frame, and people on neighbouring courts may be incidentally in frame. No audio is used. From the video we work out where the ball and the players are, and what shots were played.
3. Why — three separate purposes
- Scoring your match. The system watches the ball and works out the score, so nobody has to keep it.
- Clips — short highlights of your own match, if you ask for them.
- Improving the system — keeping some footage to train and test the scorer, if you separately agree to that.
These are three separate choices in the app. None is bundled behind another, none is ticked for you, and you can use BluePadel without agreeing to any of them.
4. How we know who you are — and what we do not do
You are linked to a match by scanning that court's QR code with your BluePadel account. That is the only way we identify anyone.
We do not use face recognition. We do not create or store face templates, we do not match anyone by appearance, and we do not recognise you across sessions. The cameras genuinely do not know who is on court until someone checks in.
Where footage is kept for anything beyond scoring the match, a program running on the court blurs faces before the video leaves the court. That destroys information rather than storing it — it is the opposite of recognising you, and nothing about the face is kept.
If the system cannot work out which player is which with certainty, it records the play against an anonymous position on court and attributes it to nobody. It does not guess.
5. How long it is kept
- Raw match video — 2 days, then automatically deleted.
- Clips of your match — 365 days, and only if you opted in to clips.
- Footage kept to improve the scorer — 730 days, and only if you separately opted in to that.
- Play data (positions, shots) — 365 days.
These limits are enforced automatically by the storage system, not by anyone remembering to delete things. Nothing is kept beyond 2 days unless everyone who was on court had agreed to that specific purpose, and still agrees at the moment we would keep it.
6. Where it is stored
In South Africa, and only in South Africa — storage, processing and backup. Footage is never transferred outside the country, and is not shared with any third party.
Clips of a match are visible to the other identified players in that match. That is the only sharing that happens.
7. If you are not a BluePadel user
You can still play. You appear as an unidentified guest, which means:
- The match is still scored normally, and the other players' results are unaffected.
- Nothing that identifies you is recorded — no name, no account, no statistics.
- No clips are made from that match, for anyone.
- The video is deleted within 2 days and is not kept for anything else.
Because we hold nothing that identifies you, there is nothing about you to look up or delete.
8. If you would rather not be filmed
- Ask club staff to pause the camera on your court. It stops recording immediately.
- Turn it off in the app, under Account → Privacy & data.
- Play on a court that is not fitted with cameras.
9. Your rights under POPIA
You may ask us what footage we hold about you, correct information, delete your footage and clips, object to the processing, or withdraw any consent — at any time and without losing your account or your match history. Most of this is one tap in the app under Account → Privacy & data; you can also email hello@bluepadel.co.za.
You may also complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa) at inforeg@justice.gov.za or via inforegulator.org.za.
10. Versions of this notice
Every version of this notice stays available permanently at its own address, so you can always see the exact wording you agreed to. This is version filming@2026-09-01. When we record your choices we record which version you were shown.
